" Come, do I understand you properly? Is it assassination, or any thing of that sort, you're talking about? " Beldeman shook his head. " Those are methods for extreme cases," he said. " Yours is not an extreme case. We do not threaten you, Mr. Maraton, with death, but we do threaten you with the death of your reputation, the end of your career as a political power in this country, if you do not see your way clear to act as we desire." Maraton stood, for a few seconds, perfectly still. " You have courage, Mr. Beldeman," he remarked. " Sir," Mr. Beldeman replied, " I have been as near death as most men. That is why I occupy my present position. I am the special agent of the greatest political power in the world. When I choose to make use of my machinery, I can kill or spare, abduct, rob, ruin--what I choose. You I only threaten. I fancy that will be enough. We have our hold upon the press of this country." Maraton walked to the door and back again. " I killed a man once, Mr. Beldeman," he said, " who threatened me." " You will not kill me," Mr. Beldeman declared, with gentle confidence in his tone. " If I had known," Maraton continued softly, " I'd have wrung your neck at Manchester." " Quite easy, I should say," Mr. Beldeman agreed. " You look strong. Without a doubt I could make you desperate. Better be reasonable. My people want the railway strike, the coal strike, and the iron strike--want them both within a month. Come, what are you afraid of? Stick to your colours, Mr. Maraton. Wasn't it in the North American Review you declared that a war and conquest were the inevitable prelude of social reform in this...

Very sophisticated writing all around. Stirring. It's never clear what will be the outcome. Even tho it's a historical! This book must have been written later in his career because it shows a deep level of maturity in character and story development.

Maraton, a populist demagogue has left America in the wake of riots in Chicago (Haymarket? Pullman?) which have killed several protesters. He arrives in England in 1914 which is riven by class warfare and teetering on the brink of war with European enemies. He is greeted by Julia Trendheim and her brother, fervent Jewish socialists, who have long awaited his coming. But first he meets with the Prime Minister, Lord Foley, and encounters his beautiful niece, Lady Elizabeth.

Maraton espouses a radical program of general strikes to bring all of English industry to it's knees, and begin a decades long struggle for redistribution of wealth. In many eloquent speeches he argues for the cause of the poor. Lord Foley, on the other hand, sees England's enemies waiting for a massive labor action to cause the country to fall apart, at which time they will invade and conquer. Maraton is besieged by opposing forces who try to draw him to their side Labor Party MP's, foreign agents, the distinquished author Selingman, and the German ideologue Mar.

Before WW1, labor unrest, divisons of class society, and the advent of Socialism, Communism, and Syndicalism were the pressing political and social issues. The poor had been driven deep into misery by the industrial revolution, urbanization, and lack of education. This simmering stew is the subject of this interesting novel by E. Phillips Oppenheim. He portrays Labour Party rallies, unionist politicians, and upper class society with equal realism. Many speeches show the desperation of the poor, and the intrinsic appeal of socialism. Europe (particularly Germany) had preceded England in the empowerment of the workers. This was a threat to England both before and during the First World War.
