Lila Wallace’s day at work begins with screaming, clawing, and kicking. It’s nothing out of the ordinary; after all, she’s a high school English teacher. A pathologically ambitious assistant principal uses a bullied student as a scapegoat, and even attempts murder to eliminate a colleague whom he sees as an obstacle to his success.

Attention all teachers. This is your book Though I haven't been in school for 50 years and was never a teacher, I felt right at home in this book centered around an English teacher and the current school system. The teen characters are right out of today and the teachers much like I remember. The writer pulls you right in to the life of Lila and makes you feel quite at home with the situations and characters while introducing the uninformed like me to the politics of education, which is sadly much like the business world. This is a quick and entertaining read. I really enjoyed her fast pace style of writing plus her clever and amusing way with words. I am looking forward to more from this writer and perhaps more from these characters that seemed like they have more story left to tell.Product details

A wonderful book! Warm, heartfelt, and satisfying. Marty's veiled humor and original insights are a joy to read.
Great story....very realistic as to how a high school is in the present day urban centers. It is also realistic about how hard teachers work to make sure kids are learning and are safe.
I spent my last day off -- not doing my chores, but reading Earthly Needs, gobbling it down like a greedy child with an ice cream sundae. It was a real treat, and over too soon! When I was finished, I wished for the sequel right away. Lila and her fellow characters are an engrossing bunch of folks. I felt I knew them well, and am looking forward to more of Ms. Damon's writing. She has a true grasp of witty dialogue.
Earthly Needs is a feel good story about the daily struggles of a single high school teacher. I found myself looking forward to the opportunity to read this book, and went through it quickly. I loved hearing how Lila was attracted to two men who were polar opposites and I cheered for her final decision. Weaved through the story was the challenges a high school teacher encounters on a daily basis. A wonderful first book. I am excited to read the next one.
Very enjoyable, engaging, quick read. Situations written about can and have occurred in school systems. Can picture certain people in those situations even tho the characters depicted may be a composite. Many characters, if developed more, that can become spin off novels? Did not want to put down the book even tho was interrupted by household problems. Book was a getaway, a reprieve from mundane chores. Refreshing. Will recommend it to others.
